A couple of Shoo-fly dolls

Two doll-size (13" x 19") quilts that I have completed and embroidered with a couple of flies in pearl cotton. In the picture below, the quilt on the left is the Shoo-fly block and on the right is a variation called Churn Dash or Wrench. These are for two little girls, "J" and "E", and they are sized just about right to be used as place mats too. This project was inspired by this beautiful hand-quilted Shoo-fly doll quilt on flickr.

My fabric is from a set of Heather Bailey Fresh Cut fat quarters and Kona cotton. I machine-pieced the tops and tried hand-quilting for the first time. Practice makes perfect with hand-quilting, and I still need practice, but I'm pleased with the way these turned out. Another thing I learned is that I squared my blocks too much by taking off more than the seam allowance, and thus, the corners of the triangles run into each other when sewn together. I know the girls will enjoy them despite a few small flaws!
