Wardrobe additions

Made this summer but I'm just getting around to them.

A-line skirt #2
Pattern: Amy Butler's Barcelona Skirts, modified
Fabric: Drawing Room by Anna Maria Horner, muslin, velveteen ric rac trim
Cost: $30 (not including the pattern)

A-line Drawing Room skirt

I bought this decor weight fabric to make the Barcelona apron (along with fabric for a complimentary skirt), but after making the first one, I decided no more aprons, only skirts. The A-line pattern calls for two pieces on the back with a zipper in the center seam, but I didn't want to cut into this pretty fabric and try to match up seams. So I made simple modification to the pattern: cut 2 front pieces, install the zipper in one of the side seams, and follow all the other directions to finish. This picture is before an afternoon wedding we attended. I plan to also wear it this fall with my black riding boots and a sweater.

3/4 sleve shirt
Pattern: Simplicity #4077
Inspired by: Meringue Design's pink coriander shirt
Fabric: Carnaby Street by Robert Kaufman
Cost: $20, including pattern and 2 yards at $6/yd

Simplicity 4077

Since this is a traditional pattern which assumes some experience, I had to rely on my old Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing for tips (unlike Amy Butler's which have detailed instructions for novices). I used french seams throughout since I don't have a serger. I like the shirt and have actually worn it out to drinks, but it requires ironing (one of my least favorite chores). I love the inspriation shirt so much that I may make another if I come across the fabric.

Wardrobe bottom line: It's been a great learning experience, but the materials + time requirement + not knowing how it'll turn out until the end = me thinking I won't become a professional seamstress any time soon.

They're both fabulous, but I particularly like the skirt. Adding ric-rac is a great idea. And I love that orange velvet jacket you're wearing with it - gorgeous!!
