This July, I hit the quilting jackpot. First, I won a Quilting Arts video from Malka of A Stitch in Dye. Her blog was one of the first I began reading, and her work is truly artisitic and inspiring. In the show, she demonstrates her shibori technique for overdying and bleaching commercial fabrics to mimic piecing. So interesting.
Then, I won a pattern from Emily at Carolina Patchworks. I found her through her lovely Dear Jane quilt, and I'm constantly amazed at the beautiful quilts and patterns she turns out for her Etsy business. I chose "another brick in the wall," a pattern which very cleverly uses just one jelly roll plus background fabric, but, as you will see below, I had a different plan for my version.
Finally, through this flickr swap group, I was able to connect with Alison in London and trade some of my remaining Erin Michael Lush for some of her Anna Maria Horner Good Folks fabrics. It was just what I needed for the focus fabrics in my quilt. Thanks again, Alison!
So, without further ado, here she is..."book stacks"...a quilt for my sister that's been in the works these past couple of months. It's the last of the sibling quilts on my list for this year.

I adjusted the pattern by using fewer blocks and making only two columns instead of three to get a smaller lap size quilt. When I purchased the backing and binding, I thought I picked up exactly the same color turquoise that I used on the top, but they were quite different. No problem, I used the new turquoise for the backing and used white for the binding. It was a happy accident, because I love the white binding and turquoise would not have looked as good. I added some of the extra pieces of Good Folks in a brick path-style column on the back.

It measures approx. 55" x 68" and is quilted in all over paralell lines.

It's so beautiful!! I'd love to make one like that some day. Thanks for sharing - it really is so gorgeous!
This quit is really really gorgeous! I love how it uses more solids so as to save $$ on the focus fabric. Well done! I'm sure your sis will adore it! This design is on my list to make soon!
I absolutely love this quilt! There's an avid reader in my family that I'd like to make something similar for. ;)
That is so gorgeous!! I'm a librarian and a book lover, and I totally see a quilt along these lines in my future. :)
What an awesome quilt! I keep wondering why the Good Folks fabric is not available in any of the stores I've been in, belive me I've been in many stores this summer. I'd really like to get just even a few of those in small yardage. Question: When you do the paralell lines quilting, do you turn the quilt at the end of every line OR do you cut off and start back up at the same edge as before? Thanks.
Stunning quilt! Really well done!
Hi Di, I start quilting my paralell lines at the beginning of each line. It seems easier than turning the whole quilt every time. I start in the middle of the quilt and then turn and go the other direction for the second half of the quilt. Hope that makes sense.
I love the books stacks quilt. It is so adorable and original.
That turned out so fantastic--what a lucky sister!
You really get the precariousness (is that a word?) of balance that a real stack of books would have. Very cool.
Emily definitely has great patterns...I found her last year and just love all of her work. Just one question for you...how did you do your label? Your quilt is just beautiful!!

Hi Jody, Here is a link to the label post I wrote last year. I'm now using Printed Treasures sheets, as it's what my local quilt shop recommended. http://twodogsandaquilt.blogspot.com/2008/12/its-label-day.html
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!! I've all the sudden become crazy about these strippy-type, predominately white quilts with just the right amount of color and this one epitomizes that! I give it a 10!
Awesome!!!
