Yellow Brick Road

stacked coins quilt

The binding is finished and all this quilt lacks is a label! The pattern is Stacked Coins from Last Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts. It was easy to follow, although I cut straight strips instead of freehand rotary cut as suggested. The hardest part was planning the layout of the coin stacks so that there is enough movement and balance in the fabrics.

Stacked Coins Quilt

I used remaining fabrics from my orange bird quilt, and added fat quarters of yellows and oranges. The background is Espresso Kona Cotton, which replaced my first purchase of Kona in Earth that was much too bland. The backing is a Jane's Paradise/Free Spirit print found on sale. It was quilted by machine using bright orange thread in parallel lines 3" apart forming diamonds. I used the same thread to hand sew the brown binding so the stitches are visible and stand out.

This quilt is intended as a gift for someone special, but I debated whether the colors are just right or too 1970's orange and brown. My husband doesn't understand my hesitation, but I recall my parents house growing up having lots of orange and brown. Still, I've decided this quilt is more modern than retro, and I really like the way it turned out, especially after a good wash and dry.

Whoa, this helps me a lot, I will cut the strips straight too, it's just less waste in my opinion.
